Specs: Intel Core 3. I really don’t know why the simplest of tasks hogs all of the Disk usage. This causes the entire computer to run really slow in quick, short bursts of lag. This issue can be caused due to third-party application conflict or virus on the computer.

Method 1: Step 1 : I would suggest you to check which process is utilizing the Hard Disk on Windows 8. Right click the columns headers and click “Select Columns”. Now the columns will be added to the view and will display how much each process is utilizing from the hard disk. Step 2: Please disconnect all the external devices other than mouse and keyboard and check if it helps. If the issue persist, follow method 2. Method 2 : I suggest you to Perform Clean Boot which helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

If the issue persist, follow method 3. Method 3: Delete files using Disk Cleanup: 1. To open Disk Cleanup from the desktop, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings, tap or click Control Panel, type Admin in the Search box, tap or click AdministrativeTools, and then double-tap or double-click Disk Cleanup. In the Disk Cleanup dialog, select all the checkboxes for the file types that you want to delete, tap or click OK to delete files.

If the issue persist, follow method 5. Important : While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive, while the bad sectors might be recovered however there might be pertinent data loss. Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Right, I seem to have solved this by completely updating Windows – which I thought was already up to date since it updates automatically. I initially thought it was a registry problem so I went to seek solving that first. Apparently updating ‘repairs’? To correct it I went to Windows Update, checked for updates and downloaded all the necessary updates even though I was mostly up to date.

Then, if you go to Windows Update again and check for updates it comes up with less important optional updates and I downloaded and installed those too. After a reboot I thought I was done but my Total Security antivirus notified me of a Windows Update from for some reason never told me about that update before, nor did the Windows Update tool itself.

I proceeded to install it with no issue and then rebooted my computer. That’s it really, not too sure of anything specific, but it worked. If it’s anything to mention, I had already done Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragment that Arul suggested above since I do those in that order every now and then to keep the computer in top shape. If this hasn’t worked for any other that have this problem, I highly suggest looking into the other two areas which could cause this problem: third-party conflict and then malware malware problems are rarer, I’m sure.

Try Arul’s methods for the third-party conflict solution. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. Search the community and support articles Windows Windows 8. L Dsa.
